Needle "Tips"

Handy Hints Needle Size and Selection

When it comes to buying needles there are some helpful tips to keep in mind. 

Needles are measured in 2 ways: Length & Gauge (Diameter). When determining the correct gauge, remember the higher the number, the small the diameter. For example a 18 gauge needle is smaller than a 16 gauge needle.

Needle Size & Selection:

  Gauge Length
Poultry 22 3/8" x 1/2"
Baby Pigs (IM) 20 1/2"
Nursery Pigs (IM) 16 or 18 3/4" or 5/8"
Sows/Boars (SUBQ) 16 or 18 1"
Calves (<300 lbs) (SUBQ) 18-20 1/2" x 3/4"
Cattle (IM) 16 or 18 2/4 or 1 1/2"
Sheep/Goat 20 to 22 1/2" or 1"
Horses 18 or 20 1"
Small Animals (All Ages) (SUBQ) 20-22 1/2"
Small Animals (All Ages) (IM) 20-22 3/4" or 5/8"


IM - Intermuscular (neck area)

SUBQ - Subcutaneous (neck area preferred method)
